De HTC Desire was ooit het vlaggenschip van HTC’s toestelaanbod. Maar Het lijkt er nu op dat dit toestel geen update meer naar Gingerbread krijgt. Op de Britse HTC Facebook-fanpagina laat de fabrikant weten, dat er niet genoeg geheugen in de HTC Desire zit, om ruimte te bieden aan zowel Gingerbread als de Sense-gebruikersinterface. Voor mensen die toch al een hekel aan HTC Sense hadden is het een extra reden om te klagen over de zin en onzin van skins, gemaakt door fabrikanten.
In een officiële reactie laat HTC nog eens onomwonden weten, dat de gebruikerservaring voorop staat en dat telefoons geen Android-updates krijgen als dat niet haalbaar is. Ze geven tegelijk aan dat je maar met software van externe ontwikkelaars aan de slag moet gaan, als je Gingerbread wilt hebben. Je raakt dan alleen wel je garantie kwijt.

De reactie, die op de website van Gizmodo is te lezen, luidt:
Because every HTC phone is a combination of a unique HTC hardware and software experience and a core operating system, we only update phones if it improves the customer experience as we balance features, performance and usability. Open access to Android means that third party developers are free to modify elements of the code, remove entire features or significantly alter the phone experience based on their preferences. Our priority is providing customers an HTC experience they can rely on.

However, we`re sorry to announce that we`ve been forced to accept there isn`t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We`re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.
